Bulldogs give the community hope

Published: May 24, 2012 1:00 PM
Updated: May 24, 2012 4:24 PM

To the Editor,

Many are likely aware that a group of us have formed the Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society with the goal to purchase the Alberni Valley Bulldogs as a non-profit community owned team. We realize that we have had to come out very quickly with a campaign that had many challenges and variables that have not been of our making.

I wanted you to know why I agreed to be a part of this effort during this initial phase and why I hope people will consider pledging some financial support.

My motives are complex yet simple: there is a very real danger that the Alberni Valley may lose this franchise.

We have tried not to use this fear factor as a main motivator for people and we have tried to stay positive but the bottom line is people should not be complacent and think that this team will be staying no matter what. If we lose this franchise I would doubt we would ever get another back.

I am not na?ve to think a junior hockey team can change the fortunes of a community. I am, however, keenly aware that our community needs positive opportunities and activities that contribute to its healthy social fabric.

We need opportunities to come together, to take pride in our community, to celebrate, to network and to feel good about where we live.

We cannot afford to lose another positive entity that contributes in this way.

When I was involved in the efforts to build the Alberni Valley Multiplex I was accused of being a dreamer, out of touch with the needs and economic realities of the Alberni Valley and I have heard these same criticisms again.

I respect people?s opinions and their right to how they feel. I do, however, ask that we all look at the bigger picture of what it takes to make a strong and vibrant community.

It is a delicate system of social and economic pieces that we must be very careful to preserve or our community will suffer.

Tom McEvay,

Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society

real economics: Conversion to a sustainable society will be difficult ...

When politicians are forced to clean up after the banksters, they are left with few resources to address the problems of the real economy.

Knocking the Wind Out of U.S. Energy Options

05/25/2012
Elliott Negin,?Director of News & Commentary, Union of Concerned Scientists

Unless Congress acts soon, the wind industry will have to trim its sails--and its workforce.

An essential federal tax break for the fledgling industry, scheduled to expire at the end of the year, has become a victim of Washington gridlock. President Obama was in Newton, Iowa, yesterday at TPI Composites, a leading wind blade manufacturer, to again ask Congress to extend the production tax credit, which provides a credit of 2.2 cents per kilowatt-hour of electricity produced by wind turbines--as well as geothermal, biomass and underwater turbines--for the first 10 years of production.

The president also urged Congress to expand a 30 percent tax credit instituted in 2009 for investments in companies manufacturing renewable energy components. The package, called the Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credit, provided $2.3 billion in credits for solar panel parts, "smart" electric meters, fuel cell components and wind turbines.

Over the last decade, wind power has become one of the fastest growing energy sources around the world. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in the United States alone wind generated 120 billion kilowatt hours last year, 20 times more than in 2000 and enough to light up more than 20 million households. That 32 percent average annual growth rate is due to a number of factors, mainly improved technology, state standards requiring utilities to ramp up their reliance on renewables--and the federal production tax credit.

The production tax credit, which debuted in 1992, helps level the playing field between wind and coal and natural gas and is critical for financing new projects. Although most wind power developers don't pay taxes because they're not yet turning a profit, they can raise capital by selling the credits to companies that do.

Unlike a number of fossil-fuel and nuclear-power subsidies that are permanent, the production tax credit has to be renewed by Congress every few years. That puts the relatively new wind industry at a distinct disadvantage, making it difficult to attract investors and plan years in advance. And if Congress doesn't extend the production tax credit this year, the industry will take a significant hit. A December 2011 study by Navigant Consulting estimated that investment in wind projects will drop 65 percent, from $15.6 billion in 2012 to $5.5 billion in 2013; the industry will have to lay off nearly half of its workforce--some 37,000 people--next year; and wind developers will install only 2 gigawatts of wind power in 2013, less than a quarter of what is expected this year. more

Energy Revolution Interruptus

Germany Stalled on the Expressway to a Green Future

By Frank Dohmen, Alexander Jung, Michael Sauga and Andreas Wassermann ?05/23/2012

Germany's energy revolution has hardly begun, but it's already running out of steam. There is a lack of political decisiveness and companies are complaining of a dearth of incentives to invest billions in necessary infrastructure. Progress or no progress, taxpayers continue footing the bill.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the leader of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), will see federal diversity on display this Wednesday when she hosts Germany's governors for an energy summit in Berlin. She can expect to see 16 governors and hear 16 different opinions -- at the very least.

Each delegation has a different notion of what Germany's energy revolution should look like. The delegation from the northwestern state of Lower Saxony wants to promote offshore wind farms, while the representatives of the southwestern state of Baden-W?rttemberg favor projects that make more sense farther inland. The Bavarians are calling for new gas-fired power plants in the south, while politicians from the northeastern state of Brandenburg are championing the unfettered expansion of the solar industry, which is ailing in the east.

The cacophony reflects the current state of affairs. Things are all over the place in the energy turnaround at the moment, and nothing seems to be working. The key project of the coalition government of Merkel's CDU, its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), and the pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP) is stalling before it has truly begun.

A year ago, the chancellor was still able to fire people's imaginations with her energy plans. "We can be the world's first industrialized country to successfully navigate the transition to the electricity of the future," Merkel said at the time. When she summarilyfired Environment Minister Norbert R?ttgen last Wednesday, she had returned to the harsh light of reality. In a considerable understatement, Merkel admitted that "the implementation of the energy turnaround still requires substantial efforts."

Brandenburg Governor Matthias Platzeck, a member of the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), deplores the "intolerable jumble of authority" the federal government is creating during the energy turnaround. His fellow Social Democrat Matthias Machnig, economics minister of the eastern state of Thuringia, compares the "biggest infrastructure project of the postwar era" to a marathon, adding that Germany is "only 50 centimeters past the starting line." And that, says Kurt Beck, the SPD governor of the southwestern state of Rhineland-Palatinate, is the federal government's fault. "To this day, there is no clear policy in Berlin," he says. more

Earning Extra Income Online | Online Business Expert Articles

?

The internet has become a complete cyber replica of the real world. People can buy groceries, send messages to friends, take classes and even shop for clothes online. With this being the case, many people have wondered if it is possible to work from their computer or just earn extra income online. There are tons of scams on the internet offering jobs that offer hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but this doesn?t mean there aren?t entirely legitimate ways of earning money online.

Writers usually have the best shot at earning additional income online. There are several websites that offer writing services for people who need articles, content for websites, or even product reviews. These websites of course do not do the work themselves. They pass these assignments onto freelance writers who do the work in turn for what is usually a set amount per project. The website also gets a portion of what the customer pays, in order to cover their operating costs.

There are also ?pay per task? websites that allow people to earn extra income online. These websites offer money for completing tasks that are sometimes as simple as commenting on website forums. These sites do not usually pay very much per task, and many of them have a waiting period to allow their customers to ensure they are happy with a completed task. If someone is sitting at home doing nothing, however, it is a good way to make some extra money.

A very common way that people make money online is through online auction and sales sites. These websites allow users to post goods, and sometimes services, onto their site for a small fee. It is possible to sell anything on these websites as long as it?s not breaking any laws. If a person needs quick money they can even set an auction to only last one day. Using these sites is a great way to get rid of things that a person doesn?t need any longer while making a few dollars in the process.

One way to earn extra money on the internet that is usually overlooked is local community websites. These websites usually have sections for personal ads, items for sale, and jobs. The great thing about these websites is the fact that the website takes no fee if an item is sold through it. Users are able to post items they want to sell along with their contact information. Most people prefer to do business locally and without having to pay shipping charges, so this method of selling items is often preferred over auction websites.

One way of earning money online is something that most people do every day: Blogging. Many people have their own blogs that they periodically post in, but they don?t know they can make money doing so. Several websites, including Google, have a system set up that allows a person to post ads on their blogs. Whenever these ads are clicked on through that person?s blog, the blog owner receives a small payment. These ads allow people to make money doing something that they already love to do, even if it is a very small income. If someone is interested in earning money online, it?s as simple as finding the right website.

German doctors apologize for Nazi-era crimes

(AP) ? Germany's medical association has adopted a declaration apologizing for sadistic experiments and other actions of doctors under the Nazis.

In the statement adopted earlier this week in Nuremberg, the association said many doctors under the Nazis were "guilty, contrary to their mission to heal, of scores of human rights violations and we ask the forgiveness of their victims, living and deceased, and of their descendants."

In addition to performing pseudo-scientific experiments on concentration camp inmates, German doctors also were key to the Nazi's program of forced sterilization or euthanasia of the mentally ill or others deemed "unworthy of life."

The medical association says "these crimes were not the actions of individual doctors but involved leading members of the medical community" and should be taken as a warning for the future.

Usher's Ex-Wife Claims He Slept With Bridesmaid From Wedding

: [ send to a friend ]

Usher may be regretting his child custody case going to court.

The R&B singer was on the stand complaining ex-wife Tameka Foster kept hiring new nannies when a new allegation was levelled against him.

"Miss Williams actually traveled to Miami with you and baby Usher." said Foster's lawyer. "She was a nanny for you, was she not?"

"Miss Williams left Miami because you were discovered in bed with Maya Fox Davis?"

Davis was a bridesmaid at Usher and Tameka's wedding and the incident is said to have occurred while he was still officially together with his wife.

However, Usher's attorney immediately objected to the question and reminded the court they were not trying a divorce case so the question was "irrelevant."

On Monday, Usher broke down and cried in court when Foster's lawyer showed photos of him with friends in Europe, suggesting he cared more about partying than his children.

Foster has said Usher doesn't care about following rules and was late bringing the kids back several times.

Usher claims it was because he was usually "held up at the gate trying to get in."

"She has not respected me and I didn't want to do the same," he said. "I always wanted to be respectful of the agreement that we had and try to abide by the rules that we had."

Foster wants full custody of their two sons while the singer is asking the court for increased visitation.

Total Vibration ? Blog Archive ? Home Improvement Projects to do ...

You can have a better chance at a higher price, as well as an actual buyer if you make sure to do the right home improvement tasks before you get ready to sell your home. It is essential to be true to yourself and really figure out which items need to be traded out, cleaned up or repaired. Both major and minor changes could be necessary and the following are some standards to bear in mind when thinking about which projects are worthwhile.

One of the very first things you need to do when your house is on the market is make sure that all of the most important systems and appliances are working properly. Pay particularly close attention to your heating and cooling systems, your plumbing and your water heater. You need to keep in mind that all potential buyers will have the house inspected and when major issues arise they will either rethink the sale or force you to lower your price. Appearances count as well, and if your boiler looks like it hasn?t been replaced in several decades, it won?t make a good impression at all. This is true for your refrigerator too. You need every potential buyer to understand that you cared enough about your home to keep all of the important things up to date.

As you prepare to put your home on the market, do not go out and by state of the art gadgets for it. More often than not, these will not provide you with enough additional value to the home in which you will be able to excuse the out-of-pocket expenses. This takes in things like hot tubs and swimming pools because a lot of individuals consider them to be extra comfort items. This is also pertinent to costly landscaping or features in your yard, like a fountain or a Koi pond. That is fine if you happen to own some of these items, but do not go out and spend money on them with the intention of making your home have a better chance of selling. In budget conscious times of today, people will often feel that these features are driving up the cost of the home. Things like swimming pools, spas and hot tubs also cost a lot to maintain, which many prospective buyers will not want to deal with.

When you are trying to sell your house it is important to keep it as clean as possible. If you have carpets, make sure they are vacuumed regularly. A better idea is to have them shampooed. You need to be aware of any odor problems you might need to fight. This is especially important for houses with smokers or pets in them. Any smokers in the house need to get used to smoking outside only and pet odors are easily contained with carpet and room deodorizers. You also need to make sure that pet hair is removed from the floors and your furniture. You have become used to your pets and you love them but potential buyers might be turned off by them or even allergic to them. A home that looks and smells clean will always be more appealing to potential buyers.

It?s good sense to take steps to make sure that your house is in the best condition possible when you want to show it to potential buyers. You do not want them to have to figure out how it is going to look after it has been cleaned up, painted or repaired. Most people prefer it if the house is already in at least near perfect condition. All the same, make sure you consider these guidelines before you take on any major home improvement projects.

Study shows how to keep a Mars tumbleweed rover moving on rocky terrain

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

New research from North Carolina State University shows that a wind-driven "tumbleweed" Mars rover would be capable of moving across rocky Martian terrain ? findings that could also help the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) design the best possible vehicle.

"There is quite a bit of interest within NASA to pursue the tumbleweed rover design, but one of the questions regarding the concept is how it might perform on the rocky surface of Mars," says Dr. Andre Mazzoleni, an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering (MAE) at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the research. "We set out to address that question."

Mazzoleni and Dr. Alexander Hartl, an adjunct professor of MAE at NC State, developed a computer model to determine how varying the diameter and mass of a tumbleweed rover would affect its speed and ability to avoid getting stuck in Martian rock fields. Rock fields are common on the surface of Mars, which averages one rock per square meter.

"We found that, in general, the larger the diameter, and the lower the overall weight, the better the rover performs," Mazzoleni says. In addition, the study found that a tumbleweed rover would need to have a diameter of at least six meters in order to achieve an acceptable level of performance ? meaning the rover could move through rock fields without getting stuck.

Using the model, the researchers also found that tumbleweed rovers are more likely to bounce than roll across the surface, due to the spacing of the rocks and the size of the rovers.

"Computer simulations are crucial for designing Mars rovers because the only place where you find Martian conditions is on Mars," says Mazzoleni. "Earth-based testing alone cannot establish whether a particular design will work on Mars." Mars has approximately three-eighths of Earth's gravity. And the atmospheric density on the surface of Mars is only duplicated around 100,000 feet above the Earth's surface.

Tumbleweed rovers are attractive because they can cover much larger distances, and handle rougher terrain, than the rovers that have already been sent to Mars ? such as Spirit and Opportunity. "This model is a tool NASA can use to assess the viability of different designs before devoting the time and expense necessary to build prototypes," Mazzoleni says.

While tumbleweed rovers would lack the precise controls of the wheeled rovers, they would also not rely on a power supply for mobility ? they would be literally blown across the Martian landscape by the wind.

###

The paper, "Terrain Modeling and Simulation of a Tumbleweed Rover Traversing Martian Rock Fields," is published in the March/April issue of the Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets.

After years of reducing their contact with pharmaceutical sales representatives, physicians now risk an unintended consequence: Doctors who rarely meet with pharmaceutical sales representatives or who do not meet with them are much slower to drop medicines with the Food and Drug Administration's "black box" warnings and to adopt first-in-class therapies.

According to a study published May 21 in The Journal of Clinical Hypertension, doctors whose access to pharmaceutical sales representatives is limited can take more than four times longer to change prescriptions based on new information than their peers who have more frequent contact. This longer response time holds true whether the physicians are responding to "positive news" related to an innovative therapy or "negative news" related to a newly discovered medicine risk.

George Chressanthis, professor of healthcare management and marketing and acting director for the Center for Healthcare Research and Management at Temple University's Fox School of Business, led the study in collaboration with ZS Associates, a global sales and marketing consulting firm with a very deep presence in the health care industry.

"This study analyzed for the first time and on a large scale what happens to physicians' prescription decisions when you decrease the access that pharmaceutical sales reps have to doctors," Chressanthis said. "We saw that increasing access restrictions affect physician decision-making in ways not anticipated by those at health care systems or large group practices who created these policies."

Chressanthis, his research team and ZS consultants began to measure the behavior of primary care physicians and specialists in 2008 when Chressanthis was at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP. They drew from ZS' annual AccessMonitor report, which since 2006 has tracked how frequently 300,000 physicians and other prescribers meet with pharmaceutical sales reps. According to AccessMonitor, the number of doctors willing to see reps has declined about 20 percent since 2008. In 2010, about 11 percent of American physicians had "severe" or "no-see" restrictions on rep access, while 34 percent had "some" restrictions.

The study measured prescription activity and behavior by primary care physicians and specialists from 2006-2008 as it related to the following three major product events:

  1. The October 2006 launch of a first-in-class drug to treat Type 2 diabetes (sitagliptin) (physician sample size: 65,088);
  2. the August 2007 issue of a black box warning (i.e., the FDA's most serious medication warning) for a drug (rosiglitazone) used to treat Type 2 diabetes (physician sample size: 58,647); and,
  3. the January 2008 release of a negative outcome associated with a therapy that combined a cholesterol-lowering drug (simvastatin) and another medicine (ezetimbe) to treat dyslipidemia (physician sample size: 72,114).

In the case of sitagliptin, physicians with a "very low" level of sales rep access took up to 4.6 times longer to introduce the new drug to patients than physicians who employed a "medium" level of access. For the black box warning, physicians with "very low" access were up to four times slower to reduce their use of this treatment than physicians with "low" access. In the clinical trial involving the negative outcomes of a lipid therapy prescription, physicians who limited sales rep access showed "significantly less" response in changing their patients' prescriptions than did physicians in less restrictive offices.

ZS managing principal Pratap Khedkar, co-author of the study, said the research demonstrated that most physicians should seek to balance their information sources.

"Though health care professionals work hard to minimize distractions and maximize the time they spend with patients, it's clear that sales rep access restrictions imposed by well-meaning physicians and group practice leaders can result in serious information gaps," Khedkar said. "Even though pharmaceutical sales representatives are not the only source of information, they do help physicians stay current on therapy developments. These findings should be carefully considered by those who set policy whether it's at the physician group practice level or on the national stage."

The study also showed primary care physicians rely more heavily on sales reps for drug information than do specialists. "When primary care physicians reduce or eliminate contact with these reps, it impairs their ability to stay current and affects their prescription behavior," Khedkar said. "Because specialists concentrate in a narrow field, they can stay current by other means, including conferences, online forums, podcasts and academic journals. Thus, the updates they receive from reps have less impact on their prescribing abilities."

Chressanthis provides these final notes about the importance of this study. "Our study affirms simple intuition that when physicians have to make decisions involving complex issues with less than complete information available to them, and where the consequence of a wrong decision is significant as seen often in healthcare, unintended consequences are likely to appear," he said. "Policies that promote physician ignorance of new medical information resulting from access limits runs counter to protecting patient health."

###

Beside Chressanthis and Khedkar, the report authors also include Nitin Jain, ZS principal; Prashant Poddar, ZS consultant; and Michael Seiders, formerly Director of Strategic Public Policy Planning at AstraZeneca. Lead author Chressanthis was employed at AstraZeneca from 2000-2009. He still retains stock grants in AstraZeneca. The research was funded by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP.

Julius Genachowski voices support for capped, tiered broadband

julius-genachowski-capped-broadbandFCC honcho Julius Genachowski has come out in favor of usage-based pricing for your broadband. At this year's Cable Show, he said that he supported the sort of usage caps that Comcast adopted last week and hoped that such plans would reduce costs for those who use less internet. Comcast's new pricing structure offers a 300GB monthly cap, after which point it'll charge users $10 for every extra 50GB used. We're not sure how this'll play out, but we suspect anyone with a Netflix or Hulu addiction might feel less than pleased this morning.

10 Sci-Fi Faster-Than-Light Systems

Found in: Star Trek

Warp drive is surely the most famous way to get your butt to a distant star. But, as with anything related to Star Trek, there's not a simple explanation. The basic story is that if you combine matter and antimatter fused with some dilithium, you can create a subspace bubble that exists outside the normal fabric of space?time. With warp plasma spewing out of a ship's nacelles you can now propel yourself faster than light to varying degrees (the famous "warp factor" you'll often hear Starfleet captains shouting about).

Maintaining a warp drive ain't easy, which is why every iteration of Star Trek had an (awesome) chief engineer and a set with a big blue glowy thing. For that reason alone it is at the top of the list.

Plausibility Factor: We're gonna give this one an 8 and direct you to the work of Miguel Alcubierre. In 1994 he presented a paper on the "Alcubierre Drive" that presents concepts very similar to a warp bubble.

Defining Moment (The Note)

By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone ) and AMY WALTER ( @amyewalter )

NOTABLES: ?

DEFINE OR BE DEFINED: With Democrats trashing Mitt Romney's business record at Bain Capital, the presumptive Republican nominee is attempting to wage the presidential campaign on his terms. He released his first general election television ad today - a seemingly positive vision of his top priorities if elected. But as ABC News Political Director Amy Walter points out, the ad amounts to a subtle - but razor-sharp - contrast to President Obama.

IN THE HOUSE: ?A "This Week" exclusive on Sunday. ABC's George Stephanopoulos sits down with House Speaker John Boehner and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi about simmering tensions on Capitol Hill on the budget, taxes and other key issues.

NOTE IT! In our virtual political roundtable, ABC's Amy Walter on why Republicans are all of a sudden walking with a spring in their step and Rick Klein on the perils of the super PAC era.

THE NOTE:

During a week when Democrats kept Mitt Romney on defense with their attacks on his work at a private equity firm - attacks that Romney said he considers "character assassination" - the presumptive Republican nominee attempted to regain his footing by unveiling his first television ad of the general election.

The ad, titled "Day One" envisions the first day of a Romney presidency, and according to the 30-second spot, it will be a busy one. (WATCH:? http://bit.ly/Johw5H)

"President Romney immediately approves the Keystone pipeline,?creating thousands of jobs that Obama blocked," the ad's announcer says. ?"President Romney introduces tax cuts and reforms that reward job creators, not punish them. President Romney issues order to begin replacing Obamacare with commonsense health care reform."

The ad will run in several battleground states, including Virginia, Ohio, Iowa and North Carolina.

But the Romney campaign's description of this as a "positive" ad should get a "pants on fire" rating. It is simply a criticism of the Obama administration but with pretty images and softer tones instead of ominous music and scary voices.

It follows on the heels of a one-two punch earlier this week from the Obama campaign and an allied super PAC, Priorities USA Action, which attacked Romney's record at Bain Capital. Both released television ads highlighting job losses at a Kansas City steel company taken over by Bain.

"The issue that will never go away - Mitt Romney's career as a corporate raider and his creation of Romney Economics," Democratic National Committee spokesman Brad Woodhouse noted this morning, introducing a new web video that keeps Bain front and center. (WATCH: http://youtu.be/No0jNi5Vv3U)

It's more evidence that the Obama campaign and Democrats are doing everything they can to try to define Romney faster than he can define himself.

"The purpose of the president's ads are not to describe success and failure, but somehow to suggest that I'm not a good person or not a good guy," Romney said at a campaign stop in Florida yesterday, "and I think the American people will know better than that."

Nevertheless, the former Massachusetts governor's challenge is clear.

"He must demonstrate how and why the man who ran Bain Capital, the man who relished 'creative destruction,' the man who gave Obamacare a test run in Massachusetts and who knows of?NASCAR?only through his acquaintances with various team owners provides the better choice for a more hopeful, more prosperous America," Republican strategist Ford O'Connell notes in a US News commentary. "He doesn't have to be perfect. He doesn't have to be likeable. But he does have to be someone we think we know and understand." http://bit.ly/KjgIic

NOTE IT!

ABC's RICK KLEIN: It's not that pretty, but we may have stumbled onto something important about the super PAC era in the events of the last 24 hours. The fact that the public learned the identity of the person considering Jeremiah Wright ads - a person who founded a major online brokerage and whose family controls a baseball team - contributed mightily to the fact that the ad isn't running, and may never run. The major players in super PACs haven't been shadowy figures, they've been out in the sunlight, or at least close enough to it that they have the potential to wilt in its shine.

ABC's AMY WALTER: For the first time since this cycle, Republican strategists and politicos are starting to really believe that Romney can win this thing. A combination of strong polling numbers nationally and in traditionally blue states like Wisconsin, combined with good fundraising numbers (and a lack of Democratic firepower on the super PAC side) has given the GOP a spring in their step that had been missing for much of the last few months.

ROMNEY REJECTS ADS AIMING TO TIE OBAMA TO REV. JEREMIAH WRIGHT . Yesterday Mitt Romney rejected reports of a plan to air attack ads against President Obama by rehashing ties to his former pastor, the controversial Rev. Jeremiah Wright, reports ABC's Emily Friedman. The plan, which was first reported by the New York Times on Thursday, had a $10 million price tag, and was? developed by "a group of high-profile Republican strategists" and Joe Ricketts, the founder of TD Ameritrade.? http://abcn.ws/ Jy7a7y

-ABC's Jake Tapper dissected the immediate distance Romney put between his campaign and the proposal:? http://abcn.ws/ JLaCLc

-Democrats were quick to point out comments Romney had made on Obama's relationship with Wright during an interview with Sean Hannity, notes ABC's Matt Negrin.? Romney?said he believed Obama didn't understand "that Judeo Christian philosophy is an integral part of our foundation."?"I'm not sure which is worse: him listening to?Rev. Wright or him saying we must be a less-Christian nation," Romney said. Romney addressed his comments to Hannity on Thursday - "I'm not familiar with precisely what I said, but I stand by what I said, whatever it was," Romney said.? http://abcn.ws/J3Uz9y

-One of the strategists who reportedly oversaw the proposal was GOP ad man Fred Davis- whose resume boasts a long list of buzzy political ads, including Christine O'Donnell's infamous "I'm Not A Witch" ad from 2010. ABC's Amy Bingham takes a look at some of the highlights in his reel.? http://abcn.ws/Klbiou

-And ABC's Shushannah Walshe takes a look at the risk vs. reward of going negative in political ads.? http://abcn.ws/KX6sAe

SENATOR COBURN: RETURN THE TAXPAYERS MONEY FOR THE CONVENTIONS . Senator Tom Coburn has his eye on a bigger target than the $800,000 GSA conference in Vegas- the Republican and Democratic conventions. ABC's Jon Karl reports that as of May 3, the Republican and Democratic parties have each received checks from the U.S. Treasury for a total of $36.5 million to be spent on their conventions in Charlotte and the Tampa this summer.? Now Coburn has written a letter to RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz asking them to give the money back.? "Can we agree once and for all the party is over when it comes to travel and meetings paid for by the taxpayers?" Coburn wrote in a letter on Thursday.? http://abcn.ws/ JjiKFJ

MATT DOWD: WHAT PALIN CAN TEACH OBAMA ABOUT SEIZING THE MOMENT. Life is really about the moments and whether we're ready to take advantage of them- says ABC's Matt Dowd. "In the campaign during the last few weeks, I see two of those moment opportunities having surfaced" Dowd says. "President Obama and his campaign bypassed one key moment, while Sarah Palin took advantage of the other. It kind of shows the difference between a politician and campaign that makes decisions tethered to a plan and from logic, and another who makes decisions based on their gut and from their heart."? http://abcn.ws/KwPwlZ

FAREWELL AMERICANS ELECT. The third party group that sought to nominate a third party presidential candidate through an online nomination process officially its nomination process on Thursday, reports ABC's Amy Bingham. UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES: RICKETT'S ANTI-OBAMA PLOT RISKS CUBS STADIUM GROWTH. Bloomberg's John McCormick and Julie Bykowicz report: "The admission by a Ricketts' spokesman yesterday that one proposed advertising campaign focused on the president's relationship with a Chicago preacher known for racially charged sermons removed the element of surprise, increased scrutiny of his political activity and put at a negotiating disadvantage one of the Ricketts family's prized possessions - the Chicago Cubs? The Ricketts' standing in?Chicago, Obama's hometown and a city dominated by Democrats, is diminished at a time they are looking for political and financial support to make renovations to 98-year-old Wrigley Field baseball stadium and the neighborhood around it."? http://bloom.bg/JkMvpD

ROMNEY PRAISES CLINTON, OBAMA PRAISES REAGAN. The New York Times' Peter Baker reports: "To listen to the candidates on the campaign trail these days is a form of political whiplash. Mr. Romney lavishes praise on the very Democratic Mr. Clinton for breaking with his party's traditional big-government orthodoxy, while Mr. Obama harks back to the very Republican Mr. Reagan for agreement that millionaires should not pay lower tax rates than the middle class."? http://nyti.ms/M0jYmq
