Passenger plane crashes in Nigeria's largest city

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? A passenger plane crashed into a two-story building in Nigeria's largest city of Lagos on Sunday, officials said.

Casualty figures were not yet known, said Lagos state emergency manager Femi Oke-Osanyinpolu.

The Dana Air flight was taking passengers from Lagos to Abuja, said Harold Denuren, head of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

Federal emergency management confirmed the crash in a neighborhood just outside the airport and said that its emergency personnel were on their way to the scene.

The weather in Lagos on Sunday was clear and sunny.

Lagos' international airport is a major hub for West Africa and saw 2.3 million passengers pass through it in 2009, according to the most recent statistics provided by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

In August 2010, the U.S. announced it had given Nigeria the FAA's Category 1 status, its top safety rating that allows the nation's domestic carriers to fly directly to the U.S.

The Nigerian government said it also now has full radar coverage of the entire nation. However, in a nation where the state-run electricity company is in tatters, state power and diesel generators sometimes both fail at airports, making radar screens go blank.

University Union | Revamped Juice Jam survey weighs student input, cost for headliner options

Asst. Feature Editor

University Union released its survey for 2012?s Juice Jam concert on Friday. Run a finger through the list, and big-ticket names abound. Pitbull. Ke$ha. Deadmau5.

But the survey isn?t intended to bring in superstars ? it?s intended to use the superstars as an accurate depiction of the genre of music students want to hear.

?We aim to give students realistic expectations for our programming,? said UU President Lindsey Colegrove. ?When we select an act to bring to campus, we program directly off the survey results.?

A total of 3,200 students participated in the organization?s fall 2011 Juice Jam survey, Colegrove said. Approximately 3,700 completed the survey for possible acts to bring for last year?s Block Party show. The headliner, DJ Kaskade, wasn?t among the options listed on the questionnaire.

?Since Rock the Dome featured two hip-hop artists, we wanted a big electronic headliner for Block Party,? said Kenny Consor, UU?s concert director. ?This year, we had an opportunity to secure Kaskade, and we secured him. He put on an incredible show.?

But with a survey covered in big-time musicians, it is often unlikely those musicians will actually make it to the stage. In past years, Consor said UU placed some massive names on the survey for the sake of gauging genre interest.

?Although certain big names were on the survey last year, we had no intention of booking them,? he said.

Because students made assumptions when they saw huge names, Consor said, UU removed artists from this year?s survey that would be impossible to secure.

To determine which artists to add to the survey, UU?s Board of Directors looks at artists who are scaling the Billboard charts, who have considerable Top 40 airplay, and who other comparably sized college campuses have booked, Colegrove said.

Colegrove said two of the most important factors in booking large-scale concerts are availability and cost.

?There are some instances where no matter how much students want to see an artist, we cannot bring them,? she said.

This year?s survey was tagged with a disclaimer that the artists on the survey are not confirmed, and have not agreed, to perform at SU.

When the survey results are tallied, UU reaches out to artists from the top down.

?The number of acts we reach out to varies,? Colegrove said. ?But we always start with the highest scores and work our way through other options.?

Recent headliners fared well on UU?s surveys. Rapper Kid Cudi, who headlined 2011?s Block Party, garnered 36 percent of first-place votes and 30 percent of second-place votes. Hip-hop as a genre has fared well on the survey, bringing artists like Ludacris, Rick Ross and B.o.B as recent headliners.

But openers haven?t been pulled from the surveys as of late. Block Party?s last two years? worth of opening acts ? indie-pop duo Phantogram and alternative rockers Cold War Kids in 2012 and hip-hop artists Damian Marley and Nas in 2011 ? were not options on their respective surveys.

Colegrove said UU concert openers tend to be smaller acts that are just breaking onto the scene. The organization also tries to bring acts in genres that are underrepresented on campus.

?Kanye opened for Fergie in 2006 before he became Kanye,? she said. ?It was before he became a household name.?

Results from the survey also play a part in which acts are selected for smaller Bandersnatch Music Series concerts, Colegrove said. Students can write in artists they?d like to see perform on campus, and UU representatives look for artist names that show up repeatedly.

Some bands are new to this year?s retooled survey. Others, like Vampire Weekend and LMFAO, make their fourth appearance in as many semesters. Consor hopes to build on numbers from last semester and swears by the process.

Said Consor: ?The survey has certainly been a reliable tool.?

What's in game at E3 Expo? You wanna know, and we're gonna tell ...

Follow me, Patrick Roanhouse, as I cover major press news from the E3: Electronic Entertainment Expo -- the the biggest video game trade show in the United States. Developed and birthed when the video game industry outgrew the once gigantic consumer electronics tradeshow Comdex, E3 expo first pressed the start button in 1995.?

Historically?Los Angeles based, E3 Expo marks the start-off point for the titans of the video game industry to sell their newest wares to retail corperate buyers for the Latin, American, and European markets in Las Vegas-level neon showcases. An industry,?journalism, and buyer only tradeshow, attending E3 Expo typically is the the dream for most video game nerds eager to see the next big thing.

News breaks, tech is shown and people openly weep. Joy or sadness, you never know which. But this is the tradeshow that gets kids and man-childs burning pen to paper for holiday wishlists. This year plans to be a big one. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are all speculated to announce or set release dates for big bad brand new home game consoles.

The industry has greatly evolved since the days of Pong, Atari 2600, and Colecovision. Video games and video consoles are massive multi billion dollar multimedia convergence platforms. With the?integration?of "apps" and downloadable content the new game consoles have evolved to now be the end all be all box for your home entertainment?experience.

But the big-three console makers will be drop big news this year. As previously stated, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, each have new consoles in the works. Now pushing the?boundaries?of the online gaming, 2k video, motion control, and 3D. If rumors are to be believed, 4k video will be state of art and gamers will get even more user control with voice and motion. Nintendo, though, is just entering the HD race with the new Wii U, while another minor internal beefed up to the Wii and Gamecube; its new killer feature is an iPad-like six-inch touchscreen and joy pad combo controller for the primary player. It was demo showcased behind closed doors at last year's E3. But the big question burning in most gamers' mind's eyes is ''What will Sony and Microsoft have?"

Sony has their system spec leaked Playstation 4, codename 'Orbis'. In the Microsoft camp, they have their developer whispered?Xbox 720, codename 'Durango'. Both are rumored to support more platform services intergration for online stores and media playback. But they are also rumored to push full 1080p 60fps 3D video support. Also multiplayer and 3D games the tech is being prepped to handle the future Super HD video standards of 4k video -- display tech that only just got announced in prototype form at the CES 2011 tradeshow this year from LG and Sharp.

The point is the big boys are coming out and they are ready to fight it out in this next chapter of the console wars. I will provide coverage from the press?conferences?and interviews with developers over the course of the insanity that takes the downtown LA area like a tropical storm.

The current schedule for major press?conferences?I will focus on are:

  • Monday, June 4th, 9:00 am -- Xbox E3 2012 Media Briefing
  • Monday, June 4th, 6:00 pm -- Sony E3 Press Conference
  • Tuesday, June 5th, 9:00 am --?Nintendo All-Access Presentation @ E3 2012
  • Tuesday , June 5th, 6:00 pm --?ShowStoppers @ E3

All times are Pacific.

I will also do booth tours and interviews and post them as the day goes by between the show floor days June 5th to June 7th.

The biggest risk for breast cancer patients is usually not original tumor, which is removed by surgery. The cancer becomes particularly deadly if it metastasizes and forms tumors elsewhere in the body.

But drugs to target the metastatic process would fail the current clinical-trial system for breast cancer treatments.

Patricia Steeg is the chief of the Women?s Cancers Section at the National Cancer Institute. She argues in the journal Nature that a new approach is needed in testing and approving breast cancer drugs. [Patricia S. Steeg, Perspective: The right trials]

New breast cancer drugs today must demonstrate that they shrink established tumors. But a beneficial drug might not reduce the size of a tumor. Instead, it might fight metastasis in a number of ways?it could kill keep cells from escaping the tumor, or kill them in the bloodstream.

Steeg argues that the FDA needs to change the model, and that anti-metastasis drugs should be tested in combination with current therapies. The success should not be related only to shrinking tumors, but rather to preventing new tumors from forming. She says this approach will help not only breast cancer patients, but millions of survivors in remission who worry that a new tumor will appear.

The Demise Of Guys By Philip Zimbardo - Business Insider

Psychologist Philip Zimbardo claims that today's young men are destined for failure because of porn and video games.

In his controversial book The Demise of Guys: Why Boys Are Struggling And What We Can Do About It, Zimbardo and co-author Nikita Duncan outline why he thinks men are failing in education and personal relationships.

He suggests parents limit or cut off access to computers and video games to get their sons on the right track.

Some highlights from the book:

-Females currently outperform males at every level, from grade school to graduate school. Boys are 30 percent more likely than girls to drop out of high school and college, according to the National Center of Education Statistics.

-In 2011, young men's SAT scores were the worst they had been in 40 years.

-Even Hollywood has caught on: films like Failure to Launch, Knocked Up and Jackass mock the ineptitude of this generation.

-Boys account for 70 percent of D's and F's given at school.

-Research shows guys aren't interested in being husbands, fathers or the head of the household.

-Boys are four to five times more likely than girls to have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Two-thirds of students in special education programs are guys.

-The average boy spends 13 hours a week playing video games. The average girl spends 5. The average young American will spend 10,000 hours playing video games by age 21. That's twice the time it takes to earn a bachelor's degree.

-The average high school boy spends two hours watching porn every week. Men can't escape porn: 13,500 full-length commercial porn films were released in 2011, compared with 600 Hollywood films.

-Researchers claim that internet pornography is hurting young boys' ability to form meaningful romantic relationships because they objectify their partner.

-It's predicted that 60 percent of bachelor's degrees will go to women by 2016.

-63 percent of men surveyed said they had a lack of motivation because of mixed messages from the media and society on their role.

-70 percent of young men surveyed said their generation wouldn't be as smart or innovative as their peers in other First World countries.

Here's a telling graph from the book:
