It was one of South Bend's first multi-story apartment buildings that was built back in the early 1900's. Now what's known as The Rushton Building will be used for housing again.
For more than ten years the four story building at the corner of Washington and Williams, by Central High School, has been vacant. But it's now being completely remodeled and restored by the South Bend Heritage Foundation.
Friday and Saturday, there will be tours showing what parts of the local historic landmark will be preserved.
By fall of 2013, it should be ready for 23 new apartment units designed for senior citizens that meet certain income guidelines. Many feel these apartments will bring some life back to Michiana.
?We really view this Rushton as a signature building West Washington Historic District,? says Marco Mariani of the South Bend Heritage Foundation. ?This is a building that makes a statement on this corner on West Washington and Williams Street and it?s really on the edge of downtown on West Washington. It's just a critical property and critical building to bring some life back.?
It was built in 1906 by two brothers working in real estate. Back then everyone ate at a cafeteria in the basement, and used a community laundry shoot.
So kitchens and washers and dryers will have to be installed. Plans already include an office for real services to serve seniors.
